Trump administration asks the Supreme Court to allow quick third-country deportations to continue (AUDIO)
(SRN NEWS) – The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to keep allowing fast deportations of migrants to third countries, arguing the policy is a critical public-safety tool and necessary to enforce immigration law.
The request seeks an immediate pause of lower-court orders requiring migrants to receive a meaningful opportunity to object before being sent to countries other than their homelands. Solicitor General D. John Sauer says those requirements create unworkable delays, even when claims of persecution or torture are filed late or appear weak.
The administration says roughly 25,000 people in the country illegally have already been deported to third nations. Officials argue the removals are used when home countries refuse to accept migrants or when returning them is not possible. Foreign governments, they say, provide assurances that deportees will not face persecution or torture.
A lower-court ruling has already led to the cancellation of a flight carrying 70 people with criminal convictions, according to the administration. Officials warn the new procedures could cause cascading delays and force the renegotiation of international agreements.
Critics say some deportees face serious danger and may be sent to countries they barely know. Lawyers for two men sent to Equatorial Guinea allege they were beaten and held at gunpoint.
The Supreme Court previously allowed the flights to continue while considering the dispute.
