Vance Contacts Senior Iranian Official as Tehran Weighs Qatari-Mediated Proposal

By The Media Line Staff

US Vice President JD Vance contacted Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, at President Donald Trump’s direction as Washington pursued possible renewed negotiations with Tehran, while Iran separately considered a Qatari-mediated proposal aimed at ending its conflict with the US and Israel.

Vance sent Rezaei a letter to explore whether the two countries could return to negotiations and avert a possible US attack on Iran in the coming weeks, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday evening, citing US officials and people familiar with the matter.

Rather than discussing specific terms of a peace agreement, subsequent contacts between US and Iranian officials centered on establishing a potential negotiating framework, according to a person familiar with the matter. Rezaei said last week that Tehran would not negotiate until certain core Iranian demands were met.

“We are not negotiating with them. We will have an outcome one way or another. It will happen soon,” President Trump said last week.

Separately, an official briefed on negotiations said Wednesday that Iran was examining a Qatari-mediated proposal and was expected to respond by the end of the week.

Qatari mediators presented the draft to Tehran on Sunday amid concerns that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could resume attacks on Iran this week.

The proposal outlines a seven-day process addressing principal security and strategic concerns of Tehran and Washington. Both sides would take specified confidence-building measures each day, while several countries would formally guarantee compliance. If accepted, the process could begin as early as next week.

President Trump repeated threats Friday to strike Iran again.

Iranian security officials told Reuters that Tehran had drawn up detailed plans to attack Gulf undersea cables if the US and Israel resumed attacks.

A spokesperson for Vance declined to comment on the contacts, while the White House referred questions to the vice president’s team. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said he had no information about the outreach. Rezaei and the Supreme National Security Council could not be reached for comment.

“They wanted to make a deal, but they like to drag it out. Maybe they’re waiting for the elections or something—but it won’t help them,” President Trump told reporters Tuesday night.
