US Strikes Iranian Launchers Preparing To Fire Sea Mines Toward Hormuz

US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) personnel were allegedly seen preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines toward the Strait of Hormuz, a US official said.

The operation was the first US strike of its kind in weeks and came after US Central Command completed clearing sea mines from international shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz last week.

“Revolutionary Guard forces were observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines toward the Strait of Hormuz,” Axios reporter Barak Ravid quoted the official as saying.

Iran’s Fars news agency had earlier reported that an explosion was heard in the area but said the cause was unclear.

The US official said American forces continued to closely observe developments around the strait following the mine-clearing operation.

“US forces are monitoring the area closely and remain prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through this essential waterway,” the official said.

The reported preparations by the IRGC came after US Central Command finished removing sea mines from international shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz last week.

Seyed Mohammad Marandi, an Iranian-American academic, responded to the US operation with a warning directed at the Trump administration.

“The Trump regime has made a grave mistake,” Marandi posted following the strike.
