Saudi Arabia Deploys 100 Fighter Jets as Yemeni Forces Secure Bab el Mandeb

By The Media Line Staff

A Saudi-led coalition sent about 100 warplanes Monday as Yemeni government forces opened a major campaign against the Houthis and said they had captured the Bab el Mandeb strait on the Red Sea.

On the ground, the Giants Brigades and Nation’s Shield Forces gained control of the Bab el Mandeb area, a spokesperson said. The government also reported advances around Dhu Bab, saying its forces captured the airport and secured the route between Dhu Bab and Mokha.

President Rashad al-Alimi announced the campaign, dubbed “Dawn of Yemen,” with the stated goals of dismantling Houthi military capabilities, returning state institutions to government control, recapturing Sana’a and ending the coup.

“With the will of our people, the bravery of our forces, and the support of our brothers, Yemen will move toward a new dawn” al-Alimi vowed Monday.

Government troops encircled hundreds of Houthi fighters in Dhu Bab and called on them to give themselves up, according to the spokesperson. Other Houthi fighters escaped the area aboard boats.

Coalition aircraft are maintaining continuous cover for the government troops and providing aerial protection over the Bab el Mandeb Strait. Since “Dawn of Yemen” began, coalition forces say their aircraft have struck and destroyed 324 high-value Houthi targets.

The campaign comes after fighting intensified again in Yemen, with the Houthis taking territory near Taiz and extending their control along the Red Sea coast.
