Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed With Lung Cancer After Successful Surgery
By The Media Line Staff
Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican announced Tuesday in a medical bulletin.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a 90-minute operation at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after preoperative tests raised suspicions of cancer. Following the procedure, he was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
“The operation was successful and there were no complications,” the Vatican said. “After the operation, the pope awoke normally and returned after a brief period of observation to his room.”
The Vatican said Wednesday morning that the pope had a “peaceful night” at the hospital, where he is expected to remain for about a week. The lump was initially detected during what the Vatican described as “routine checks.”
Future treatment for Pope Leo was not discussed in the statement. The Vatican said doctors were not currently discussing chemotherapy or other therapies while awaiting the results of additional tests.
The Vatican press office noted that the medical bulletin described the removal of the lung lobe as “radical,” indicating that doctors had removed all suspect tissue in hopes of eliminating any remaining traces of the cancer.
Leo announced the planned surgery Sunday while speaking from the balcony in St. Peter’s Square after delivering the traditional Angelus blessing.
The pope said the nodule, or growth, on his lung was “contained” and had been detected “at a very early stage,” but that doctors had advised him to have it removed.
