Damascus Gate Stabbing Attack Leaves 1 Wounded, Terrorist Killed

By The Media Line Staff

A 33-year-old East Jerusalem man was shot and killed by Border Police after attempting to stab civilians and security forces near Damascus Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City early Friday, in a suspected terror attack that lightly wounded a man in his 30s.

The wounded man was evacuated by United Hatzalah to Shaare Zedek Medical Center for further treatment, the emergency medical organization said.

The attacker held an Israeli ID card and traveled to the Damascus Gate area by motorcycle, which he parked nearby before approaching civilians with a knife, according to Ynet. The civilians escaped and alerted the police.

Border Police officers in the area received the report and responded to the scene. Police said the attacker then attempted to stab security forces. A male and female Border Police officer opened fire, neutralizing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No members of the security forces were wounded, according to police.

The stabbing attempt came hours after more than 50,000 people gathered at the Western Wall to recite selichot, prayers held ahead of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
