Teddy Bridgewater steps away from Lions, leaving question at backup QB

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has stepped away from football. Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters that Sunday, when Bridgewater was placed on the reserve/retired list. The 33-year-old journeyman had signed a one-year deal with the Lions in March after spending 2025 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also spent 2023 and part of 2024 with Detroit. Bridgewater had been signed to back up Jared Goff. Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer, the only other QB on the Lions roster, had been getting more reps in training camp earlier this week when Bridgewater was absent and again on Sunday. Campbell says Bridgewater is “going to be missed.” The Lions plan to sign a veteran quarterback as soon as Monday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Atlanta Braves ace Chris Sale was ejected by Dan Merzel before a pitch was thrown in Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees, a day after being called for a balk that scored a run. As umpires took the field and walked by the Braves’ dugout on the third base side, Sale began barking. Merzel tossed him and Sale said something to crew chief Dan Bellino as the two talked near the dugout rail. Sale was called for his third career balk by Merzel during the fifth inning of Saturday’s 5-4 loss. He began fiercely yelling at Merzel before manager Walt Weiss continued the argument and was ejected.

Asterisk Talley wins the US Women’s Amateur and gets her 2nd USGA title

OOTELAH, Tenn. (AP) — California teen Asterisk Talley is the U.S. Women’s Amateur champion. She seized control in the championship match at The Honors Course with three straight birdies and was 3 up after the morning session. The 17-year-old poured it on against Anna Iwanaga of Japan. Iwanaga won the ninth hole in the morning for a 1-up lead. She didn’t win another hole the rest of the way. Talley chipped in for eagle on the 29th hole for a 7-up lead and closed out the match on the next hole. Talley now has two USGA titles. She won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball in 2024.

After winning the Women’s Tour de France for the second time Demi Vollering tried hard to hold back tears while the Dutch national anthem played. It was her toughest moment of the day after an ultra-dominant performance on the bike from the 2023 champion. Vollering won the ninth and final stage to extend her overall lead over Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney to 1 minute, 18 seconds. Niewiadoma-Phinney had started Sunday’s stage only eight seconds behind Vollering, who got a time bonus for winning the stage. Former Giro d’Italia champion Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy was third overall after Marlen Reusser lost valuable time after crashing.

They didn’t arrive at their hotel in New York until nearly 10 p.m. Hammon felt resting her top players could help the team on the back end of the schedule because all three will be taking part in the FIBA World Cup next month, so they won’t be getting any rest when the WNBA goes on break next month.
