Cunningham, who is white, was shooting a fast-break layup in the first quarter when Carrington, who is Black, came from behind and hit her in the head and neck, knocking her to the court as the shot went in. Later in the game, Fever star Caitlin Clark was assessed her eighth technical foul of the season, triggering an automatic suspension for Indiana’s next game.

WNBA commissioner says league will continue discussing issue of transgender participation

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has sent a memo to teams that addresses ongoing discussions around transgender athletes in women’s basketball. Roberts said he wants to see more consistency from the offense in the coming days.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Drew Brees has entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig. Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton introduced Brees, who set records and won a Super Bowl playing for Payton with the New Orleans Saints. Brees has the second-most yards passing and touchdown passes in league history. Fitzgerald ranks second on the career list in both receiving yards and touchdown catches. Vinatieri is the career leader in points and field goals. Kuechly became the second-youngest player inducted into the Hall at age 35.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Roger Craig revealed during his induction speech into the Pro Football Hall of Fame that he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. The former San Francisco 49ers star running back spoke in a prerecorded video message while he sat on stage wearing his gold jacket at Tom Benson Stadium on Saturday. Nearly eight minutes into a nine-minute speech, Craig announced his diagnosis. He says his doctors believe “it may be related, at least in part, to the concussions” he experienced during his playing career.

Hossler and Brennan share Wyndham Championship lead with postseason berths at stake

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Beau Hossler and Michael Brennan are tied for the lead in the Wyndham Championship with nothing less than a spot in the PGA Tour postseason at stake. It’s the final event of the regular season and the top 70 in the FedEx Cup advance to the playoffs. Hossler had a collection of tough par putts and handled two rain delays for a 66. He needs to win to reach the FedEx Cup playoffs. Brennan shot a 63 and can advance with a tie for second. They’re one shot ahead of Tom Kim. Five players are separated by two shots.

College sports bill doesn’t get vote, but does get spot on the Senate’s September calendar

The Protect College Sports Act failed to reach a vote during an all-night, pre-recess session in the Senate, though the bill did gain a spot on next month’s calendar after the chamber comes back from its summer break. The measure has been touted as one that would put guardrails around an escalating spending spree in college sports as the industry struggles to adapt to a new model in which teams can pay players. It has been on a roller-coaster since its introduction in March. The SEC and Big Ten backing of the bill saved it but failed to sway a few key Senators from states with schools in that conference.

WNBA quickly rescinds technical on Fever’s Caitlin Clark that would have forced 1-game suspension

CHICAGO (AP) — The WNBA quickly rescinded a technical foul assessed to Caitlin Clark during the Indiana Fever’s win over the Chicago Sky on Saturday. The technical would have been Clark’s eighth of the season, triggering a one-game suspension for the Fever star. She would have had to miss Tuesday’s game against New York. But, a WNBA spokesman said the technical had been rescinded. In the third quarter of the Fever’s 90-86 win over the Sky, Clark made contact with a referee when she was forced out of bounds and was called for a technical foul.

Bills coach Joe Brady enjoys father-son moment before team holds first practice in new stadium

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills first-year coach Joe Brady used the team’s first practice in its new $2.1 billion stadium to enjoy a brief father-son moment. With fans beginning to file in, and rock music blaring over the state-of-the-art sound system, Brady emerged from the tunnel carrying his 3-year-old son Jordan for a walk along the sideline. As much as the first-year coach wanted to use the practice to simulate a game-day routine and get accustomed to the team’s new surroundings, Brady couldn’t help but work family into the equation. The first practice at Highmark Stadium featured a crowd of at least 30,000, a couple of Josh Allen touchdown passes, a brief but heavy downpour, and closed with a fireworks show.
