Hornets trade LaMelo Ball, Josh Green to Timberwolves for Naz Reid, draft picks, AP source says
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the Charlotte Hornets have agreed to trade point guard LaMelo Ball and Josh Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round draft pick, three first-round pick swaps and three future second-round picks. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the deal has yet to be approved by the league. ESPN was first to report the trade. The three first-round pick swaps will be in 2028, 2029 and 2030. The Hornets also will get three second-round picks in 2029, 2032 and 2033.

Detroit Lions player Terrion Arnold in Florida jail, accused of directing violent confrontation
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold is in a Florida jail awaiting a court hearing after authorities described him as the leader of a plot to confront and pistol-whip three people. Tampa police say Arnold believed the men had stolen from him and his friends at an Airbnb rental. But investigators found they had nothing to do it. Police say Arnold will face kidnapping and armed robbery charges. His agent says Arnold denies any wrongdoing. The state attorney’s office has up to 21 days to file formal charges.

And the one-and-done era is far from done. Those were some of the things that stood out from the two-day NBA draft in Brooklyn, which started with the Washington Wizards taking AJ Dybantsa on Tuesday with the No. 1 pick and continued with a number of trades in the second round Wednesday. The first eight players taken were college freshmen, tying the record, while the Knicks traded into well back in the draft to save money.
Tennis Hall of Famer Chris Evert says she will miss Wimbledon after recurrence of ovarian cancer
Tennis Hall of Famer Chris Evert says her ovarian cancer has returned and treatment will prevent her from attending Wimbledon this year. The 71-year-old Evert was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December 2021. In December 2023 she revealed her cancer had returned. She announced on social media she already has had surgery “as the first step in my treatment and recovery” after tests revealed the cancer again had returned. She said she will begin chemotherapy “in the coming weeks.” Evert is an 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and is an analyst for ESPN.
Christian Pulisic feels ‘great,’ hopes to play for US in final World Cup group game vs Turkey
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Christian Pulisic says he feels “great” now after missing one World Cup match with a calf injury. He hopes to play for the U.S. in its final group match against Turkey. Pulisic played a dynamic first half in the Americans’ historic 4-1 victory over Paraguay to open their home World Cup nearly two weeks ago, but the AC Milan midfielder came off at halftime after an injury from training stiffened up. Pulisic said nearly played in the U.S’ 2-0 victory over Australia but was held out to get closer to full fitness for the games ahead.
Victoire’s Marie-Philip Poulin played through a torn ACL and is set for surgery in July
MONTREAL (AP) — Montreal Victoire captain Marie-Philip Poulin revealed Thursday she played through a torn ACL and a torn meniscus in her right knee to help the team capture the PWHL championship and is expected to be out indefinitely after surgery set for late July. The 35-year-old Poulin initially was injured in the preliminary round at the Olympics. She still played for Canada in the knockout stage to help it reach the final before losing to the U.S. in overtime and leaving Milan with silver. She aggravated the injury on March 15 when Montreal played Boston.
Chicago Cubs acquire left-hander David Peterson in a trade with the New York Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have patched a hole in their depleted rotation by acquiring struggling left-hander David Peterson in a trade with the New York Mets. The deal was announced before the series finale between the teams at Citi Field. The Cubs placed Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday, adding to their injury woes in their rotation. Brown has a neck strain, and Cabrera is sidelined with a left hamstring strain. Jameson Taillon, Cade Horton and Justin Steele also are on the IL. The 30-year-old Peterson is 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA in eight starts and eight relief appearances this year. He is eligible for free agency after this season.
‘Heat hazard’ declared for F1’s Austrian GP as Europe battles scorching weather
SPIELBERG, Austria (AP) — Formula 1 drivers will carry extra cooling gear for this week’s Austrian Grand Prix after “heat hazard” rules were activated as hot weather causes disruption across Europe. It’s the first time that F1’s heat rules, introduced last year, have been used for a race in Europe. A heat hazard applies when temperatures above 31 degrees C (88 F) are forecast for race day. It can get much hotter inside the cockpit.
