Shinnecock Hills has a troubling history for 36-hole US Open leaders
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Wyndham Clark leads the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills with a four-shot advantage. However, history shows that no one leading at the halfway point there has won in the last 40 years. Geoff Ogilvy, who won 20 years ago without breaking par, recalls advice from Judy Rankin to “save every shot.” Last year, J.J. Spaun’s comeback win at Oakmont highlighted the unpredictable nature of the tournament. Past U.S. Opens at Shinnecock Hills have seen leaders falter, with Brooks Koepka, Retief Goosen, Corey Pavin and Raymond Floyd emerging victorious after trailing.

A final group stage match against Turkey in Los Angeles awaits. The optimism and expectations of a deep run in the tournament are rising quickly.
Dylan Wu laughs at himself after five-putting his first hole in the third round at the US Open
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The first player on the course at Shinnecock Hills got the third round of the U.S. Open off to a rough start. Dylan Wu five-putted the first hole while playing with heavy winds over 20 mph that gusted even worse. The 29-year-old finished his round with a 12-over 82 to sit 16 over for the tournament. But after it took Wu making a seven-foot putt on the 18th hole Friday just to make the cut, he is just glad to be able to spend Father’s Day on the course with his dad, Kevin, who got him into golf.
Larger World Cup led to predictions of lopsided affairs. The results tell a different story
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — Criticism began to pour in about how the quality of the World Cup would likely be affected not long after FIFA announced an expanded 48-team tournament. The critics argued that by allowing smaller teams to the expanded field, the number of weak matchups would increase, as would the chances of lopsided results. But as the biggest World Cup ever progresses, those fears regarding the quality of the competition have not fully materialized. Through the first 24 games, the goal differential was largely unchanged compared to the tournament in Qatar in 2022, suggesting the larger field did not create more lopsided competition.
Brobbey and Gakpo strike twice each as Netherlands routs Sweden 5-1 to lead Group F
HOUSTON (AP) — Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored two goals apiece to power Netherlands to a 5-1 win over Sweden on Saturday in the World Cup to bounce back after a disappointing draw in its opener and move atop the Group F standings. Brobbey’s goals came in the first half to help Netherlands get off to a great start and roll to the big win after playing Japan to a 2-all draw Sunday. The victory gives Netherlands a group-leading four points. Sweden has three points, with Japan and Tunisia scheduled to play later Saturday. Sweden’s loss to the Dutch was its biggest World Cup defeat since losing 7-1 to Brazil in 1950.

He said he was “kinda speechless” from the fan response Saturday.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Miles Russell had a long walk to his ball at the end of a long U.S. Open round with Jackson Koivun after smashing his tee shot 407 yards on the 18th hole. Imagine what he might be able to do when he’s all grown up. The 17-year-old Russell and 21-year-old Koivun were paired together in the third round, a grouping that was being referred to during TV coverage as the future of golf. Both players shot 4-over-par 74. Those scores weren’t on a difficult day at Shinnecock Hills for any golfer, let alone two that were playing on the weekend for the first time in a major championship.
US reaches World Cup knockout round and wins its group with 2nd straight victory, 2-0 over Australia
SEATTLE (AP) — The United States has advanced to the knockout round at the World Cup without injured forward Christian Pulisic. The Americans beat Australia 2-0 on Friday at Lumen Field in Seattle. A deep U.S. roster overcame Pulisic’s absence to clinch a knockout berth after two matches for the first time. The Americans later won Group D when Paraguay beat Turkey. Pulisic was sidelined because of a calf injury. The U.S. took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on an own-goal. Alex Freeman gave the Americans a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute when he headed in a deflected shot for his first career World Cup goal.
Paraguay beats Turkey 1-0 at the World Cup despite being down a man to clinch Group D for US
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Matias Galarza scored 65 seconds into the game for the fastest goal at this year’s World Cup and Paraguay held on for a 1-0 win over Turkey after playing a man down for more than half the match. Paraguay was short-handed after Miguel Almiron was issued a red card late in the first half for violating a new rule banning players from covering their mouth during a confrontation. But goalkeeper Orlando Gill made several key saves to preserve the lead. The win assured the United States would win Group D and eliminated Turkey from any chance of advancing to the knockout round with its second straight loss.
