The San Diego Padres added one more former All-Star to their rotation just before the trade deadline arrived Monday afternoon, acquiring right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers, according to multiple reports.

The Tigers sent Mize and infielder Gage Workman to San Diego in exchange for left-hander Kash Mayfield, the Padres’ No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and minor league left-hander Jackson Wolf, The Athletic and MLB.com reported.

Mize, 29, was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft and has come on strong over the past two seasons. In 2025, he earned his first All-Star nod, going 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA over 28 starts, with 139 strikeouts to just 36 walks.

This season, he sports a career-low 2.70 ERA and a 4-6 record through 16 starts, striking out 85 and walking 19.

He joins a San Diego rotation that also added former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray to go with Walker Buehler, Michael King and JP Sears.

Workman, 26, has played in 28 career MLB games, including 16 for the Tigers this season. He has batted .167 with two home runs and seven RBIs in that time while appearing at second base, third base and shortstop.

Mayfield, 21, was a first-round pick by the Padres in the 2024 draft. He is 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA through 15 starts for High-A Fort Wayne this season.

Wolf, 27, has made one appearance in the majors, a start for the Padres in 2023. He has spent this season entirely with Triple-A El Paso and has a 5-10 record and a 7.05 ERA in 24 games (17 starts).
