( ) Supporters of assisted suicide in the British Isles have suffered back-to-back defeats. Opponents of a proposed bill allowing terminally ill adults in England and Wales to end their lives defeated it in the British Parliament this month. Last month, lawmakers in the Scottish Parliament rejected their own assisted suicide legislation. The practice has been legalized in a number of European countries, including Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. But pro-life advocates have become better organized at fighting such legislation as their victories in England, Scotland and Wales attest. Here in the U.S., 13 states have legalized assisted suicide.
( ) LGBT activists are targeting the National Hockey League. They are pressuring Commissioner Gary Bettman to do more to promote the gay agenda, despite a recent rebellion by players over the issue. Bettman has tried to reduce the pressure, pointing to the league’s long standing relationship with You Can Play — an LGBT hockey organization. But his effort to get every NHL team to celebrate a Gay Pride Night has met with a backlash. A lot of pro hockey players are from Eastern Europe and are Orthodox Christians. Most of them have refused to participate in LGBT pride events and a number of teams have cancelled them altogether.
( ) A court in the second largest Czech city of Birno has sentenced a man to seven years in prison for his part in an anti-Semitic attack. The defendant was one of two teenagers who tried to set a synagogue in Birno on fire in January of 2024 by using an improvised device. The pair were part of a group of five teenagers who were arrested last year after allegedly being radicalized online by ISIS. Anti-Semitism has been on the rise around the world in recent years and surged after the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. The war against Iran has also sparked another surge in attacks on synagogues and other Jewish institutions.
( ) Rebuilding efforts are underway at the Beth Israel synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi. The building was gutted by an arson fire earlier this year. A Madison County man awaits trial in what prosecutors say was an anti-Semitic attack. He has pleaded not guilty to three federal charges of arson, damage to religious property and using fire to commit a felony. In concert with a local architect, congregation leaders hope reconstruction will start by late summer, with the goal of hosting services in the building by the Jewish New Year in October 2027. The total cost of rebuilding is not yet known.
