Phillies activate LHP Jesus Luzardo off IL ahead of season finale

Sep 27 (Field Level Media) – The Philadelphia Phillies reinstated All-Star left-hander Jesus Luzardo from the 15-day injured list prior to Sunday’s critical game against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.

Right-hander Jose Urquidy was designated for assignment by the Phillies (87-74), who can clinch their fifth straight postseason berth on Sunday afternoon as they face the American League East champion Rays (98-63) in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Philadelphia, which has lost four games in a row, holds a one-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks (86-75) for the final wild-card spot in the National League. The Phillies need to either win on Sunday or have the Diamondbacks lose to the host San Diego Padres in order to clinch a postseason berth.

Luzardo, 28, was placed on the injured list Sept. 15, retroactive to Sept. 12, with left shoulder inflammation.

After a breakout 2025, Luzardo is having his best season to date in 2026. The first-time All-Star is 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA across 29 starts. He already has set a career high with 221 strikeouts against 52 walks.

In eight MLB seasons with the then-Oakland Athletics (2019-21), Miami Marlins (2021-24) and Phillies, Luzardo is 55-46 with a 3.92 ERA and two saves in 166 appearances (150 starts). He has 996 strikeouts in all, eclipsing 200 in three of the past four seasons.

Urquidy, 31, pitched to a 3.68 ERA without a decision in two appearances with the Phillies after being claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 17.
