Phillies 2B Luis Arraez exits vs. Brewers with sprained ankle

Sep 25 (Field Level Media) – Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Luis Arraez left Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers with a sprained left ankle.

After grounding a ball to short, Arraez was attempting to avoid a tag from Jake Bauers at first base when he fell to the ground, grabbing his ankle. The second baseman, who was acquired from San Francisco at the trade deadline, was attended to by trainers before walking off the field with assistance.

Phillies manager Don Mattingly said postgame that X-rays on Arraez’s ankle were negative.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Mattingly said, saying he’s hopeful Arraez can play through the injury.

Arraez entered the game on the verge of his fourth career batting title, boasting a National League-leading .311 batting average. He was 0-for-3 when he exited, dropping his average to .310, two points clear of Arizona’s Gabriel Moreno (.308).

Bryson Stott moved from third base to second to replace Arraez, while Edmundo Sosa entered at third base.

The Phillies, who could have clinched a postseason spot with a win paired with a Padres loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, now enter their final regular-season series with a two-game lead over the Diamondbacks, who are in the first spot out of postseason position.
