(Undated) — Dog owners may live a longer life. Research published by the American Heart Association says dog ownership is tied to a 24-percent drop in all-causes of death for the general population. Individuals who have suffered a major cardiac event, such as a heart attack or stroke had their risk of death drop by 33-percent by living with a dog. Studies published in BMC Public Health say that dog owners walk an average of 22 more minutes per day making them significantly more likely to meet standard weekly physical activity guidelines. Pet interaction also lowers levels of cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone and boost oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin.
