(Nashville, TN) — Tennessee’s first woman slated for execution in over 200 years is still alive this morning. Christa Pike was scheduled to be put to death on Wednesday by lethal injection, but the procedure failed, and Pike was still breathing after receiving two doses. She was taken to a hospital after the botched execution, and Governor Bill Lee says he’s pausing executions for the rest of the year. Pike, who’s now 50, was sentenced to death in 1996 for murdering her 19-year-old classmate. She’s the only woman in Tennessee on death row.
