Avs coach Jared Bednar agrees to 4-year extension

Sep 30 (Field Level Media) – Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension through the 2030-31 season.

The team announced the deal Wednesday, hours before Bednar was set to begin his 11th season in Denver against the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

Bednar, 54, is the winningest coach in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history with a 445-262-75 record in 782 regular-season games. He also owns a 60-41 record in the postseason, winning the Stanley Cup in 2022 and reaching the playoffs in each of the past nine seasons.

“Jared has done an outstanding job over the last decade, and there’s no doubt in my mind he’s the best coach for this group,” president of hockey operations and general manager Joe Sakic said. “He commands the room and has complete confidence of the players. We’re excited to continue to have him in charge, and we believe that his presence maximizes the team’s potential while this core group is intact.”

Last season, the Avalanche set a franchise record with 121 points to claim the Presidents’ Trophy and reached the Western Conference final.

“I’m extremely happy and grateful to continue leading this group,” Bednar said. “My family and I have loved being a part of this organization from the beginning, and I can’t thank the Kroenke family and Joe Sakic enough for their support. I look forward to working hard each day this season and beyond to accomplish our goal of winning another Stanley Cup.”

Hired on Aug. 25, 2016, Bednar has the second-longest tenure among active head coaches behind the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Jon Cooper (March 25, 2013).
