The Right To Worship Act is Before Congress

(SRN NEWS) – A bipartisan bill now introduced in Congress aims to protect people’s right to worship. 

Supporters say the Right to Worship Act would create a 100-foot buffer zone around house of worship during religious services, when disruption or attempts to block entry are most likely. The measure would make it unlawful to knowingly hinder or deter someone from entering a place of worship, and to threaten or intimidate worshippers in a way that prevents them from participating. 

The bill would allow affected individuals to seek court remedies, and it would also let the U.S. Attorney General and state attorneys general bring civil actions. Penalties start at $2,500 and can increase to $10,000 per violation. 

Backers argue the proposal preserves peaceful First Amendment expression, while addressing harassment and intimidation that worshippers say they’ve faced when trying to attend services. 

Neither the House nor the Senate has approved the Right to Worship Act.  

The bill was newly introduced on August 6, 2026, as a bipartisan piece of legislation:  

• Senate Sponsors: Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI)  

• House Sponsors: Brad Knott (R-NC) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY)
