(SRN NEWS)- ) According to data from a new AP-NORC survey, most Jewish adults in this country don’t feel well represented by political leaders at a troubling moment for many in their community. A total of 63 percent say prejudice against Jewish people is an “extremely” or “very” serious problem in the U.S. At the same time, few believe that either party is doing a good job supporting Jewish people. The vast majority of Jewish voters are Democrats but just 15 percent say that the party supports Jewish people well. That may explain why a growing number of Jews have been voting Republican lately. Many cast their ballot for President Trump in 2024.
( ) Nicaragua’s crackdown on dissent, which has focused primarily on clergymen and churches lately, has now been extended to the legal profession. The government has stripped numerous lawyers of their licenses to practice in recent days, in what a United Nations expert describes as a purge. Since 2018, Nicaragua has shut down more than 5,000 organizations for criticizing the rampant corruption in the country. Most of these have been churches and parachurch ministries. A growing number of clergymen have also been arrested and some have been expelled from the country. The government is being run by husband-and-wife co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
( ) The U.K. government says a proxy group backed by Iran is responsible for recent arson and vandalism attacks on Jewish sites in Britain. The government has followed up the announcement with a ban on the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right. It has also banned Iran’s powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The move makes it illegal to support the groups. Committing sabotage on their behalf will be punishable by up to life imprisonment. The decision to ban the Guard comes long after it had been declared a terror group by the U.S. and the European Union. Anti-Semitic attacks have been surging all across Europe.
( ) Abortion will be on the ballot in several states this fall. Idaho voters will decide whether to roll back the state’s abortion ban in November. People in Virginia and Nevada — both states where the procedure is already legal through at least 24 weeks of pregnancy — are considering amendments that would enshrine abortion in their constitutions. In Missouri, which repealed an abortion ban in 2024, voters are being asked to reinstate it. The abortion industry is putting a lot of money into all of those states in hopes of convincing voters to cast their ballots for an expansion of abortion, even as other states seek to limit the procedure.
